More than two years after introducing Google Apps – and five years after introducing Gmail, Google is finally taking off the beta tag from its Gmail email service and other online programmes to attract business customers away from Microsoft Corp.
The label will also be removed from Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, Google Talk, and Google Video for Business. The move is seen as a way to attract large businesses to Google Apps, its suite of messaging and productivity applications.
“We’ve focused our efforts on reaching our high bar for taking our products out of beta, and all the applications in the Apps suite have now met that mark,” wrote product management director Matthew Glotzbach in a blog post.
The Google Blog says that innumerous companies run their businesses on Google Apps, the Google Apps for businesses was launched about two years ago along with 24/7 support. However, they have realized that large enterprises would refrain from working on software that is still in the beta stage.
With the Beta tag gone, Google has also announced some enhancements to the enterprise version of Gmail. The product now adds mail delegation and mail retention features. They also claim work is on to enhance the reliability factor of Google Apps.
For those who are used to and like the look of the “beta” tag, Google’s made arrangements to re-enable the beta label for Gmail from the Labs tab under Settings.
