Google mobile has added two improvements that will speed up mobile Gmail for Android phones and iPhones/iPod Touch. New to the service are keyboard shortcuts and address auto-completion; two time-saving features that desktop Gmail users have been enjoying for years.
An official Google blog said, “We’re introducing a major revision to Gmail for mobile that takes advantage of the latest browser technology available on iPhone and Android devices. We’ve updated the user interface, made it faster to open messages, allowed for batch actions (like archiving multiple messages at once), and added some basic offline support.”
The first addition is faster address auto-completion, which means typing the first few letters of a contact’s name or e-mail address will lead to a pop-up of possible contacts. The process is expected to be similar to the desktop version, and it works by reusing previously fetched matches in subsequent searches.
The second improvement is keyboard shortcuts for Android-powered devices in the same manner as its web application. With help of the shortcuts, the mobile Gmail users can go to inbox just by pressing ‘u’ and by pressing ‘n’ one can move to a newer mail.
Google introduced the new version of Gmail to Android and the iPhone in April. Google expects up to 18 smartphones to be released in the second half of this year. These new features are only available in the English version of Gmail mobile.
