LG has officially announced its first handset powered by Google’s Android operating system, the LG-GW620. The announcement of LG’s first Android-powered smartphones comes only a week after the company announced that it would be introducing three new Windows Mobile smartphones in the next few weeks.
The LG GW620 features a 3 inch touchscreen display, and a slide out QWERTY keyboard, a 5 megapixel autofocus camera, 3G, Bluetooth, WiFi and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Its Android platform will also provide users with access to a variety of applications and services developed by search leader Google.
“The LG-GW620 will appeal to first-time smartphone customers by offering a new and different kind of user experience,” said Dr Skott Ahn, president and CEO, LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Our objective is to provide a wide selection of smartphones to satisfy the diverse preferences of today’s consumers. This Android phone is just one of many smartphone models we plan to introduce worldwide in the years ahead.”
According to the company, the device comes with support for social networking sites, which have attracted a larger number of mobile users lately, and is also meant to offer the smartphone experience accessible to typical users. In addition, the phone boasts enhanced messaging capabilities, supposedly making it a great catch for young professionals.
The company has not announced full details of the new LG Android phone. In addition to the Android model, LG announced in early September that it would be introducing a minimum of 13 new smartphones over the next 16 months that utilize Microsoft’s Windows Mobile.
The LG-GW620 will be available in the fourth quarter of this year in select European markets.
