MTNL has announced a deal with French-US hardware vendor Alcatel-Lucent to launch its 3G services in Mumbai. This service is compatible with any 3G enabled mobile phone, laptop or netbook. MTNL has partnered with Nokia for 3G handsets.It would be available starting next month.

3G is the third generation of tele standards and technology for mobile networking, superseding 2.5G. It is based on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) family of standards under the IMT-2000.

“Our total investment for the 3G launch in Mumbai is Rs 2.50 billion and we hope to rope in 100,000 customers by March next year. Connections will be available in about a month’s time,” says MTNL chairman and MD RSP Sinha. However, due to spectrum issue, MTNL may have to limit 3G services to only 400,000 customers.

The 3G service will enable customers to make video calls, view live TV channels on their mobiles and download data from internet at speeds up to 2 Mbps. and songs, amongst many other applications involving high-speed data downloads. Additional features also include HSPA data transmission capabilities able to deliver speeds up to 14.4 Mbit/s on the downlink and 5.8 Mbit/s on the uplink.

The company has announced that it would offer four different packages for pre-paid as well as post-paid customers. Fixed monthly charges for the post-paid packages vary from Rs 250 to Rs 2,500. Apart from Delhi and Mumbai, MTNL also plans to launch its 3G services in Bangalore, Chennai and other cities soon.
