Nokia N900 mobile phone officially confirmed

Nokia has finally unveiled an ultraportable, Internet-capable device Nokia N900. The N900 is the first Nokia smartphone to run a Linux-based operating system. It is the first Maemo 5 based Internet tablet and the successor to the Nokia N810 Internet tablet.

The OS is Linux-based Maemo 5 which offers the device a comprehensive multitasking ability. The N900 is not as “normal” N Series device. The N900 provides computer-grade performance in a compact device. It is equipped with ARM Cortex-A8 processor, 1GB of application memory and OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics acceleration.

The N900 features a 3.5-inch 800×480 high-resolution WVGA touch screen, a full, slide out QWERTY keyboard and supports up to ten personal email addresses. It comes with 32GB of onboard memory and with an expansion slot for a memory up to 48GB. It also included is a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and a dual-LED flash.

“With Linux software, Mozilla-based browser technology and now also with cellular connectivity, the Nokia N900 delivers a powerful mobile experience,” says Anssi Vanjoki, executive vice president, Markets, Nokia. “The Nokia N900 shows where we are going with Maemo and we’ll continue to work with the community to push the software forward. What we have with Maemo is something that is fusing the power of the computer, the internet and the mobile phone, and it is great to see that it is evolving in exciting ways.”

The device is designed for easy texting and email. Additional software will include a Mozilla-based browser with full Adobe Flash support. The N900 comes with the Maemo 5 OS with support for desktop-style multitasking, Nokia Messaging and a new “cloud” UI. The N900 also gets full Adobe Flash 9.4 support.

It also includes GPS, an integrated FM transmitter, TV-out and USB ports. For connectivity, it has HSPA, Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi. It measures 110.9 x 59.8 x 18 mm and weighs 181g.

The N900 is now available for pre-order at Nokia Italy and Germany for €599 and will be available in selected markets from October 2009 at an estimated retail price of EUR 500 excluding sales taxes and subsidies.
