Nokia unveiled a new NFC enabled mobile phone with the Nokia 6216 classic. The Nokia 6126 is Nokia’s third Near Field Communication (NFC) device. The new Nokia 6216 classic is Nokia’s first SIM-based NFC device which enables operators to build NFC services on to the SIM card.
Nokia’s head of near field communications, Jeremy Belostock said: ‘The Nokia 6216 classic will be amongst the first commercial devices in the market complying with operator requirements using the SIM card in connection to secure transactions with Near Field Communications.
In addition to the NFC technology, the Nokia 6216 classic is outfitted with the features people desire from a next generation mobile device, including digital camera, bright display, stereo FM radio and music player, 3G connectivity and a microSD slot which is expandable up to 8GB. The 6216 supports quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz) and dual-band WCDMA (850/2100MHz) data connectivity.
NFC allows the device to store a users’ credit card and other important information securely on a SIM card. When making payments or providing entry into events, the phone can be swiped in front of a contactless terminal that automatically deducts a payment from the user’s credit card account.
The Nokia 6216 classic is expected to start shipping in the third quarter of 2009 in select markets with an estimated retail price of $ 195(approx INR 9800) before taxes and subsidies.
