Sprint and Samsung teamed up to announce the eco-friendly Samsung Reclaim phone. The device is the first mobile phone in the U.S. which claims to be made from nature-friendly bio-plastic material. Manufactured by Sprint, the phone has been constituted from around 80% recyclable material and has been packaged in a recycled paper.
The Reclaim is created from 80 percent recyclable bio-plastic material; the outer casing and the phone tray inside the box are prepared using 70 percent recycled materials. The plastic of the phone’s casing is 40 per cent corn-based. It does not include harmful elements such as brominated flame retardants, phthalates and PVC. The images and text on the box as well as the phone warranty information are printed with soy-based ink.
The phone comes with a 2.6 inch screen, sliding keyboard with QWERTY keypad and 2 MP camera with 3x digital zoom and camcorder, advanced stereo Bluetooth 2.0; expandable memory storage up to 32GB; an integrated Web browser. The Reclaim measures 3.9 inches by 2.37 inches by 0.59 inch and weighs around 3.5 ounces. It comes in two colors namely Earth Green and Ocean Blue.
It has GPS navigation, social networking functionalities with easy access to email, YouTube, text, Facebook , MySpace, Twitter and other updates and downloads. Users can have direct access to directory information and GPS-enabled directions via Sprint Navigation with Search facility.
The phone’s charger is Energy Star certified and consumes 12 times less power than the standards for standby consumption. It also boasts of a visible notification that alerts the user to unplug the handset once it’s fully charged.
When customers purchase Samsung Reclaim from Sprint, $2 of the proceeds will benefit the Nature Conservancy’s Adopt an Acre programme, which supports land conservation across the United States and protects some of the world’s most beautiful and important natural habitats.
It will be available in all Sprint retail channels such as Best Buy and Radio Shack for $49.99 with a two-year service agreement after a $50 mail-in rebate and a $30 instant rebate. The Samsung Reclaim SPH-M560 will be launched on 16th August in USA
